RE: Problem with swaying

johnr218,
I can speak from experience, I do not have such a big trailer, but I do tow with a "little, underpowered, not big enough, I can't believe your chevy tows this" 1500 silverado crew cab. I recently put 10 ply (load range E) tires on my truck and it made a world of difference. I use a friction sway control and have not had much problem, but if I had the option, I would use a dual cam system to try to completely eliminate the problem. But my first suggestion if you don't already have them, at least put 6 ply tires on your truck (load range C). For everyone that says that your truck will not pull it, please do as I do and ignore them. They like to pay $5 for diesel and it lets them rub it in your nose that they can be the first to the top of a hill. The length of your vehicle matters more than your suspension capacity, even though the stiffer suspension would help, they do sell add a leaf springs and air bags, I do not have them and do not need them.

RE: Trade my Yamaha 2400 for Honda 2000

I too opted to buy a Honda 2000 over the Yamaha due to the fuel consumption and also...you can run your A/C if you are lucky. It isn't a big deal to me but it can be done if you are at the right altitude. Besides, if I need the Air on, I will use the eu3000 but it is too heavy to take on trips if it isn't needed.

RE: 1/2 vs. 3/4 Ton Tow Vehicle

I always love the fact that the people who have the 3/4 ton or larger trucks think that there is no 1/2 ton truck that could possibly tow a paper bag on wheels. I personally tow a trailer that is almost 6000# dry and have had no problems so far. I do agree that I may not be the first one to the top of a hill or my ride may not be as bumpy when I am not pulling, but hey, I guess those are trade offs that I will have to deal with. When I started trucking a had a 290 Cummins. Definately not first on race day. When I replaced the motor, I put a 400 Big Cam Cummins in and guess what....I still made the same number of trips and made the same money each day. I think that if you tried to pull your TT with a 1/2 ton and are happy, by all means, do so and don't listen to the people who think you need a tractor to pull a pop-up.

RE: Generator Fuel / home heating oil

As was stated above, home heating and road fuel are one and the same. Just the dye used in them tells the DOT if you are using fuel that hasn't been taxed. If you are caught using dyed fuel in your vehicle, it is a $10,000 fine. Just to stir the pot a little more, you could even get away with using Kerosene in the generator (I probably would not). I know people who have used it in their cars in the winter when the fuel gelled. We have mixed it in fuel tanks of big trucks to help the fuel from gelling in sub-zero weather as well.

RE: Hot water supply not hot but tank is to temp.

I do have an outside shower and I am pretty sure that it is off unless someone other than my family has been around the camper..., but I will try anything. The water is cold at all faucets, kitchen, tub and sink in bath if this means anything. Thanks for the input.

Hot water supply not hot but tank is to temp.

I could use some help here. I have a 6 gal DSI water heater that is working fine. Our water temp has been fine for all of the trips (meaning that you actually have to add cold to make it bearable). The water is not hot coming out of the faucet anymore. As a pure guess, the water is reaching about 100-105 degrees with only hot on. I trouble shot and found that the heater is fine. My only conclusion is that the hot water bypass valve is leaking water up through it (mixing in the supply line)and into the tank which is giving me my luke warm water. When checking, if I turned off the valve, I got a shot of hot water right before the cold water ran through the pipe. I can only guess that this is due to the sudden pressure of the cold being pushed behind what hot was left in the line. What I am asking is, could there be any other possible way for cold water to be mixing in with the hot other than this valve? Thanks for any input.

RE: Check out the dealership before you buy

Living in Central PA. I would like to chime in on my expereinces with the two large RV dealers in my area. I bought my TT from Ansley RV in Duncansville. Last year, I had developed a leak in the roof. I was scared and called them. They were not going to take the TT in due to their backlog of work scheduled but when found it was a leak in a new trailer, they immediately set a time and date for drop off and repair. My wife and I put together a list of small things that were going to need attention and they fixed all things wrong. The leak was a bad seal job when the awning was attached and they showed me what they did. They also checked all other openings and replaced the slide seals and resealed a window. The only part that they didn't get in a timely fashon was the cover to the skylight over the tub which they sent directly to me to put in (I agreed to this to not have to tow it back down to them).
On the other hand, my in-laws bought a trailer from Lerch RV and took it back for warranty work in the beginning of the season (April I believe) and they had it for 5 weeks waiting for parts to fix it. They finally got it back and the converter is not working properly. That department told them to bring it back and they would fix it while they waited...They took the TT to them last Sunday and called yesterday to see if it was done and they told them over the phone that "hopefully they will get to it today". We were going to go camping together this weekend and I don't know if we will due to them needing a converter replaced. I think that they are too busy with new customers and they have a sale this weekend to try to sell new RV's. I think that this is bad relations that they would rather sell new rather than fix a trailer that they sold new last year.
I am sure that they are a good RV dealership, but this just burns me that they cannot take the time to install a new converter, since I know it doesn't take but an hour or two.

RE: Where to Carry Genny Gas

I checked into making my Honda eu2000 into a bi-fuel model, but you need two carburetors to do this, the kit to convert it drills out the carb if I am not mistaken. I just carry 2.5 gallons in my truck bed (I realize that you do not have that option) but I do not want to have to buy a carb or change mine for propane.

RE: Dry Ice Questions

My family makes a yearly trip to Quebec, Canada every year from Pennsylvania. We use dry ice to pack the food in and imagine this, we put it behind the seats in our pick-ups (extended or crew). we put the ice blocks in paper bags and then around the food and over it. It only takes us about 3-4 pieces for a regular size cooler. We pack the coolers about 5pm on a Thursday, leave at 2:30am Friday, get to the first stop on Friday evening around 6pm, stay over night at a hotel, get up the next morning and travel 180 miles of dirt road until we reach the outfitter. From there, we take a boat to the cabin for about a 2 hour ride. We end up at camp around 2-3 in the afternoon on Saturday and the food is still cold. We have even placed the milk and eggs too close to the wrapped blocks and found them frozen....still on Saturday.
For the people that are scared that the CO2 will harm you, I am sure that they are being cautious. But, I am sure that you will use your vents, a/c or windows to let in some air at some time. Even if you are stopping to stretch your legs or get something to eat.
From my experience, your one day will not be a problem to keep your food in without spoilage.
Hope this helps.

RE: Do you camp close to home-same town?

I think it is great to stay close to home. I never got a different feeling about camping if I was 15 miles from home or 150 miles from home, other than the getting there and the return trip. We camp mostly within a 50 mile radius and I even have a permanent spot at a private campground within 25 miles from my house. With a young daughter, staying close has its advantages when traveling in the truck. Happy camping to all...no matter how far you travel.

RE: Making low level drain into an outside shower????

Speaking from experience, the low pressure lines will be pressurized when you turn the pump on...dewinterizing two weeks ago, I found this out getting a little wet when I turned on the pump (to run lines to clear water) and went outside to let the water out of the lines (forgot to do this before running lines clear). Needless to say, they seem to have as much pressure as my faucets...lol

RE: Pennsylvania State Park pricing went up!!!

USCGfamily, you will not have to pay the difference. I already have reservations for Bald Eagle State Park over the weekend of May 16 and only paid $34. I wish I had known when the prices changed and I would have made all my reservations before then.

Pennsylvania State Park pricing went up!!!

I don't know how many people take advantage of state park camping, but my family loves to frequent the closer parks here in central Pennsylvania. A couple years ago and last year, the nightly rate for a modern camp site (has power and showers available) was $17 a night on weekends. For our family to camp, two nights was $34. I thought that the price was affordable for everyone who budgeted. I had gotten an email from DCNR that pricing was going to increase and I believe that the email stated that the prices would not be significant. I just got back from our maiden voyage this year (which I booked in January and paid the $34) and my daughter wanted to go next weekend so I logged on and to my surprise, when I went to check out, the balance due was $48. I am appalled that the "insignificant" price increase went up $7 a night. I am just making it be known if you didn't already and I feel that the state is going to put a hurting on a lot of people who go camping in state parks because they could afford to have family fun for a weekend. I do not know what other states charge and maybe I should be fortunate that we only have to pay that rate, but I feel that if you only have power to a site with no water except fill stations, that the state will be pricing themselves out of the camping picture and people will be looking for private places that offer full hook-ups for only an "insignificant" amount more.

RE: Did the argument get settled?

When we put disconnect switches on our big trucks (similar battery setup to an RV) we always mount them on the positive lead.

RE: EU2000i or EF2400is for 2 purposes?

That Model (yamaha 2800) is more of a contractor style model with a cage. I personally have a Honda eu2000i and am very happy with it. I would do more research but I also think that the Yamaha 2400 model does not have an eco throttle which was a main reason that I chose the Honda (size also played a role).

RE: Trip Number 2 Complete - Towing Question

I have an '06 silverado and I tow in drive with the tow/haul button turned on. That takes care of the shift points and will not let your transmission shift into overdrive unless you are on basically flat ground cruising. This is what my book recommends and everyone I know does. The only time that I shift the transmission (it is an automatic for a reason) is on grades.

RE: Fire Starters

I agree Canope, Trioxane fuel bars are the way to go. I have used them for a couple years now and have great success with them even with damp tinder.
